Sugar maple reaches a mature size of 70 to 100 feet in height and 2 to 3 feet in diameter. It is a fairly large tree with dense, oval crown, and grows in clay, loam and sand. The pale brownor pink-colored wood is hard, heavy, strong and close-grained, and is used for flooring, furniture, veneer and novelties. The trees are tapped for their sweet syrup. Birds and small mammals eat the seeds; rabbits, deer and squirrels browse the twigs, and sapsuckers ring the tree with holes and return to feed on the sap and insects it attracts. Sugar maple is a popular shade and ornamental tree, with brilliant fall color. *Limited quantities available
