Silver maple is a tall, fast growing and multi-branched tree reaching heights of 50-80 feet. It is often planted in rows within neighborhoods or in riparian areas along streams. It flowers in the spring in small dense reddish clusters. The seeds are samaras and mature in the early summer. The samaras are the largest of any native maple in Virginia. Wildlife use varies from squirrels eating the buds during the early spring; deer eating the bark during the winter and the trunk also provides a home to many tree dwelling animals, owls, and woodpeckers.
